The family of 47-year-old Sylvia Donelson, who died in Carroll County Jail in Arkansas in November of 2014, settled their wrongful death lawsuit against the county for an undisclosed sum.
According to Donelson’s autopsy report, her cause of death was atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with bipolar disorder listed as contributing factor.
The lawsuit states that the jail nurse and several police deputies found Donelson lying on the floor, swimming in a puddle of her own urine with a sandwich stuffed inside her mouth, which, six hours later, was still inside her mouth. The nurse and a Carroll County Regional Medical Center emergency medical technician said they found Donelson’s vitals to be normal, and they did not think to take her to a hospital until after they discovered she had no pulse.
The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office will not admit culpability in Donelson’s death as part of the settlement.
