FORT SMITH, AR – A free child safety seat check station will be open to the public this Saturday, April 11th from 9AM until 1PM at the Fort Smith Pavilion, 4000 Phoenix Avenue in Fort Smith. Certified child safety seat inspectors from the Fort Smith Police Department will provide inspections, and replace recalled and unsafe child safety seats free of charge. Parents will also be provided with information and instruction on proper installation of child safety seats.
“As the summer driving season approaches, it is important to assure your child’s safety seat is installed correctly and in safe condition,” said Joey McCutchen of McCutchen Napurano - The Law Firm. “This is an event that our staff looks forward to every year, we hope to replace over 100 safety seats this Saturday.” The law firm sponsors the event by purchasing child safety seats for the Fort Smith Police Department.
According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children form 3 to 14 years old. Child safety seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers in passenger cars. Improper installation of child safety seats could result in serious injury or death.
