A new survey among American physicians showed that even when drugs are not necessary for the recuperation of a patient, doctors are still prescribing such treatments.
Dr. Amir Qaseem, vice president of clinical policy for the American College of Physicians and chairman of the ACP’s High Value Task Care Force, said physicians might be doing so as a means of practicing defensive medicine to veer away from potential medical malpractice lawsuits or to meet clinical performance measures that advocate blanket treatments that are applicable to all patients.
For his part, American Academy of Family Physicians president-elect, Dr. Michael Munger, said a doctor’s personal experience and institutional history plays a part in how he gives out treatments, noting, “The beauty of following a discipline in primary care is that you continue to evaluate what you do, look at the evidence, and what does the evidence support.”
