A man is accused of drunk driving after crashing his vehicle into the side of a Fort Smith residence on November 30. The accident happened around 11:00 p.m. and no injuries of residents inside the house were reported. Fort Smith police officers responded to a call that a truck had crashed into a house and the driver was bleeding from the head. The driver later refused treatment or transport to the hospital.
The driver was identified as Derek Burks, who was previously arrested for drunk driving on Oct. 7, 2012. He was found guilty of those charges by the Fort Smith District Court. He was arrested after the crash on Monday night under suspicion of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
Witnesses say he drove his silver 2010 Dodge truck into a home on South 96th Street. He was on his way home from JJ’s Bar and Grill at the time of the accident, according to a statement he gave police. Officers immediately suspected that alcohol was a factor in the collision; when authorities asked him how much he had to drink, Burks responded, “Too much.” He failed multiple sobriety tests at the scene of the accident.
