A school bus in Mansfield was hit on October 21 on the way to school. Arkansas State Police were called to the accident on Highway 71 at approximately 8 a.m. The bus was carrying 22 student passengers when the accident occurred just south of the high school.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the bus was a 16-year-old boy. He has since been cited with inattentive driving, which troopers believe caused the Mustang to rear-end the bus. None of the 22 students onboard the bus were injured; however, the driver of the Mustang was taken to a Fort Smith hospital with unknown injuries and has since been released.
A witness to the scene was a nurse who quickly aided the young man driving the Mustang after the accident. She removed his cell phone from his pocket before contacting the minor’s parents and the local police department. Eye witnesses do not believe use of a cell phone was a factor in the crash.
