A three-vehicle accident that happened along Interstate 55 in Hammond, Louisiana has resulted in the death of one woman and left one man in critical condition. The victims were identified as Sherwood, Arkansas residents Mariam Williams and Charles Williams.
According to preliminary investigations made by the Louisiana State Police, a 2004 Toyota Avalon driven by 26-year-old Franklinton, Louisiana resident Brittany Barber Spears was headed north along I-55 when it slammed into the back of a 2014 Ford F-150 pickup truck operated by 62-year-old Amite, Louisiana resident Thomas Stephens. After this initial collision, Spears’ vehicle was sent across the median into the southbound lanes of I-55 where her Toyota collided head-on with the 2013 Kia Optima driven by Mr. Williams and in which Mariam Williams was a passenger.
Mariam Williams succumbed to mortal injuries at the scene of the accident. Charles Williams was rushed to the North Oaks Hospital where he is being treated for his critical injuries. Alcohol does not seem to be a factor in the collision, however blood samples were taken and breathalyzer tests were issued during the investigation.
