A Fort Smith accident involving a school bus full of children and a single vehicle left one woman seriously injured. The wreck took place at around 3:00 p.m. on Dec. 16 on Arkansas 253 near Karry Lane. Eye witnesses reported seeing a gold Chevrolet Cruze hit the back of a Greenwood Public School bus. The bus was carrying about 20 children around the ages of 10 to 13 years old.
The accident crushed the front of the woman’s car, forcing emergency officials to extract her using the “jaws of life.” She was immediately taken to a Fort Smith hospital with serious injuries. Firefighters on the scene reported that no children were seriously injured. After the crash, the children were taken across the street to the Living Faith Missionary Baptist Church until family members or a second bus took them home.
The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office, Sebastian County EMS, Arkansas State Police, and White Bluff/Rye Hill Fire and Rescue all assisted in the cleanup after the accident. The cause of the incident is still being investigated. Witnesses of the initial accident report that the woman may have fallen asleep while driving before veering across four lanes of traffic and colliding with the bus.
